Christmas Carols

Bernard Trafford’s Christmas Carols
The
first carol,
The Lute-Book Lullaby, is serious in tone and is characterised by a haunting
lyrical beauty that is quite striking.
The next four carols here take old, much-loved carol texts and give them new contexts in an attractive, slightly tongue-in-cheek manner. A Great and Mighty Wonder, Infant Holy and Gabriel’s Message were conceived very much as a set: The First Tree in the Greenwood (an amalgam of two well-known texts, The Sans Day Carol and The Holly and the Ivy) is a later addition in the same mould. They’re fun!
The last, No Room at the Inn, is quite different, written to an
original text for a junior choir with organ accompaniment.
